Monique du Rock was founded by Mary Rock in 2009 and
has recently has been incorporated; Mary is currently applying to become a
Certified Women Owned Business.
The
story behind the designs is as fascinating as the designs themselves so it is
worth being told. Mary Rock was born in
Bethlehem, the Middle East, and moved to Haiti as a teenager. In Haiti is where she learned her love for
fashion, her father owned a textile plant that produced fabric. In addition to the factory they had a store
front where Monique sold the fabric to the locals to in order to make their
clothes. Soon after she was married she
moved to Toronto and eventually ended up in Southern California.
After raising a family Mary decided to go back to work,
she established herself as the premier salesperson with St. John Knits at
Bullocks. That is when she was recruited
to Nordstrom, South Coast Plaza to work in the Couture Department, once again
she quickly was recognized for her sales ability. Shortly thereafter, Dorothy Maas, Couture Director and Peter
Devin, Regional Manager realized it was not simply her sales ability but her
understanding of fashion and textiles that allowed her to dress a woman in a
way that made the sale. Mary spent 11
years with Nordstrom at the Couture Department as the Valentino and Ungaro
specialist and buyer. She coordinated
fashion shows, trunk shows and catered an elite clientele that would fly to
meet with her from all over the world.
Now Mary has once again perusing her passion as a
designer and manufacture of fine knitwear; we believe that knitwear is a niche
that can and needs to be filled by a visionary like Mary. Her latest collection has a classic look with
a modern edge, her vision is to create a collection that can be worn during the
day and into the evening by today’s women.
Much Love
